Adventures in... Fire trucks?

I got these really cool pictures of Joe's fire truck on the way past our house! I say Joe's - really the volunteer department Joe and Dad work for. Dad was away at town and missed it all! :-) They were going up the road a few miles, and I was with Sarah in the barn taking pictures of Daisy. When we heard the sirens, we ran outside - and I took these pictures. Generally they get a call every week or two - so it was exciting for Joe - the new EMT! (He graduated from EMT class a few weeks ago, by the way!)

Coming up the hill....

A little closer (if it wasn't snowing so hard you could make out Joe on the left side of the truck)

Classic Picture - dog and fire truck.

They move fast - sorry, that's all I got! Gotta wait till next time! So, now I leave you with these pictures and the promise of more pics of the rest of us, - our cows, calf, chickens, farm, weather, actions, events, whatever - till later!!!

Shawney

Shawney - August 10, 2006 - March 5, 2008
Unfortunately, we have lost our first cat....Shawney (Shawn-ee) was half a Siamese - half orange tabby cat, and the best half of both. She was the first mouser on the farm - and was also the best - affectionately nicknamed "Ace" by Dad. Shawney used to bring us mice from the barn after her late nights, thankfully, she stopped soon after she grew used to the place. Her favorite person was always Mom, and Mom was the one who could calm her down on her most grumpy days. Stuart, her son, has now taken on the mousing responsibilities along with his pal, Zoe - but we'll always remember Shawney was the first mouser.

One year old - her first day here!

This past winter - One and a half years old.

Suprise!

Well - a very interesting event took place at our farm yesterday (March 12) And it happened this way;
On the way home from the orthodontist in town, Joe and Sarah decide to stop by the barn and take a look at Clover - check up on her. As they drive past - Joe sees Clover licking something on the floor of the barn.
They stop and Joe says, "What's that? It looks like a dog!" It did, too.
Immediately after, Sarah realizes what "it" is and screams - "It's a calf!" Sure enough - it was.
Dad, Joe and Sarah did most of the working while I took pictures, ran to and from the house. Mom was away in town (and was mad that Clover had her calf the one day out of the entire week that she was gone). But, thankfully - so far, at least - all is turning out for the better. Here's some pics - hope you all enjoy!!!

Daisy Mae and Clover

Hello!

A wet calf - a happy mother. Er, cow.

What do you think?

Making friends. Like the jacket? It's an old dairy thing - and keeps the calf warm. You cut off the hood and sleeves. It's SO cute.

Having never seen a calf before... Mopar's sentiments could be translated - "Huh? What's going on?"

Ready for action.

Miss Daisy Mae (the day she was born). Doesn't she look like a little deer fawn?

Spectators

Hey!!! (one day old!)

Bewilderment.

Sarah (looking at the calf... of course.)

Spring mechanic work...

Hi, Clover! You may not be able to see, but she's really a LOT smaller than she used to be... That calf took up a lot of room, huh, Clover?

What-cha laughing at?

Mopar. On top of....

The pole! He's really up there - thanks to Chip. (It's about 30 feet tall...)

Just wanted to let everyone know that the California court case declaring home schooling illegal has a petition for depublication on the HSLDA website. I encourage all of you to go to their website and consider signing this---reading up on it if you haven't heard about it yet. The site also has an 18 page court opinion paper from the LA supreme court that is sobering. This affects all of us, as CA sets trends.

No Homeschool in CA?

Take a look at this. A brother at church sent the following email out:

Response to Ruling of California Court of Appeal‘Homeschooling is Illegal in California’

On February 28, 2008, the California Court of Appeals issued a ruling in a juvenile court proceeding that declared that almost all forms of homeschooling in California are in violation of state law. (Private tutoring by certified teachers remains an option.) Moreover, the court ruled that parents possess no constitutional right to homeschool their children. This family was not a member of Home School Legal Defense Association. They were represented by court-appointed counsel throughout the proceeding. Since it was by law a confidential proceeding, to the best of our knowledge neither HSLDA nor any other legal advocacy organization had any knowledge that the right of all homeschoolers in California was depending upon the outcome of this family’s case. There are two appellate options at this time. First, we have been told that the family is appealing this decision to the California Supreme Court with their California counsel.HSLDA will file an amicus brief on behalf of our 13,500 member families in California. We will argue that a proper interpretation of California statutes makes it clear that parents may legally teach their own children under the private-school exemption. However, if the court disagrees with our statutory argument, we will argue that the California statutes as interpreted by the Court of Appeal violate the constitutional rights of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children.HSLDA welcomes other organizations and persons to assist with the amicus process so that a full defense of home education, religious freedom, and parental rights can be given to the California Supreme Court. The second appellate option is to seek to have this particular decision “depublished.” Depublication is a decision that can only be made by the California Supreme Court. If the Court determines that the decision should stand, regarding this family, on the facts presented, but that the general pronouncements of law for all of homeschooling should not be determined by this case, then the Court has the option of “depublishing” the Court of Appeal’s decision. This would mean that the case is not binding precedent in California and has no effect on any other family. HSLDA will take the lead in an effort to seek to have this case depublished. Homeschooling has offered a great opportunity for families to give their children a quality education with a moral and philosophical approach that is consistent with each family's beliefs. The ability to homeschool freely in California should not depend upon one family in a closed-door proceeding. All families should have the right to be heard since the rights of all are clearly at stake.
